  • Sedation

Gabapentin

  • Sedation


Topiramate

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Decreased verbal fluency (ease with which verbal language is produced)
  • Psychomotor slowing
  • Slowed thinking or confusion
  • Impaired memory and concentration
  • Mental slowing


Tiagabine

  • Drowsiness
  • Incoordination/dizziness

 
Oxcarbazepine

  • No cognitive side effects have been reported
  • Slight psychomotor stimulant effect

 
Zonisamide

  • Mild confusion
  • Slowed thinking - may impair learning
  • Nervousness
  • May impair verbal learning at high doses

 
Levetiracetam

  • Behavioural/Psychiatric symptoms

 
Note: The absence of information for the new anti-convulsants likely reflects limited research done on them to date.
