Phenobarbitol

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Decreased vigilance
  • Slower reaction time
  • Impaired short-term memory
  • Decreased performance IQ and mental slowing
  • Difficulty with language skills
 
Phenytoin

  • Decline in concentration
  • Memory difficulties
  • Slowed mental speed
  • Incoordination (especially visuomotor functions)
  • Negative effects on intelligence and mental slowing
 
Carbamazepine

  • Mild adverse cognitive effects caused by sedation incurred by drug
    • difficulty making decisions
    • slight memory impairment
    • some trouble with attention
    • some mental slowing
  • Psychomotor slowing
  • Modest effect on learning and memory
Effects are usually not severe.
Valproic Acid


  • Impaired attention
  • Difficulty with coordination and visuomotor functions
  • Psychomotor slowing
  • Some difficulty with complex decision-making
  • Modest effect on learning and memory
Effects are usually not severe.
Clonazepam, Clobazam and other Benzodiazepines

  • Mental Slowing
  • Severe sedation
  • Decreased attention
  • Irritability
  • Psychomotor impairment
Clobazam is less likely than clonazepam to cause psychomotor impairments or the same extent of sedation
